Type material. Holotype male ( PSUNHM). Laos: Vientiane Province, Tad Xangthevada Waterfall , 18°18’02”N, 102°44’60”E,ca. 212m a.s.l., 28.v.2022, leg. Pongsak Laudee. GoogleMaps Paratypes. Laos: Vientiane Province, Tad Xangthevada Waterfall , 18°17’56”N, 102°45’01”E, ca. 205 m a.s.l., 28.v.2022, leg. Pongsak Laudee. 1 male ( PSUNHM), 1 male ( CHM) GoogleMaps .
Etymology. The species is named for the type locality, Tad Xangthevada Waterfall.
Description. Length of each male forewing 4.5–5.0 mm (N = 4), holotype forewing 4.5 mm; specimens in alcohol with head and thorax brown, abdomen light yellowish.
Male genitalia ( Figs 2A–2D View FIGURES 2 ). Segment IX (IX) in lateral view sac-like ventrally with tall neck subdorsally, anterior margin convex, posterior margin deeply concave, ventral margin slightly sinuate ( Fig. 2A View FIGURES 2 ). Setose preanal appendages (Pre) leaf-like in dorsal view, fused with segment X in lateral view ( Figs 2A, 2B View FIGURES 2 ). Segment X somewhat rectangular with pair of small spiny apicodorsal processes on either side of mesal spiny apicodorsal process (Apid) and a pair of large smooth apicolateral processes (Apil) in lateral view; rectangular basally with trifurcate spiny apicodorsal processes with pointed apices and with two long slender apicolateral processes in dorsal view ( Fig. 2B View FIGURES 2 ). In lateral view, inferior appendages (Inf) crescentiform, each having posterior margin with tooth-like spines bearing setae (2A); in ventral view, triangular with outer teeth basolaterally and pointed apex ( Fig. 2C View FIGURES 2 ). Phallus tubular, curved downward before middle in lateral view; phallobase bulb-like; parameres slender and long, recurved downward; phallicata tubular, curved downward and with round apex ( Fig. 2D View FIGURES 2 ).
Diagnosis. The new species is in the group which includes Setodes akrura Gordon & Schmid 1987 (in Schmid 1987), S. abhirakta Schmid 1987 , and S. nausithoos Malicky & Chantaramongkol 2006 . The genitalia of these three species and the new species, are similar in the ventral part of segment IX which is round in lateral view. Similarly, the inferior appendages are crescentiform, densely covered with stiff bristles at the posterior margin in lateral view. Also, inferior appendages in ventral view are triangular. Setodes xangthevadaensis n. sp. is distinguished from these species by its segment X, which separates into trifurcate apicodorsal processes and two long slender apicolateral processes in dorsal view. No such separation occurs in Setodes akrura , S. abhirakta , and S. nausithoos .
