Bertea subaptera Rondani, 1856
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 190.
TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but later (1860a: 57) added “ in Apennino parmensi ” [ Parmese Apennines ( Italy)] .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 specimen, holotype (sex not determinable, missing all but part of the thorax, which is completely covered with mold) ( MZUF: Box 62): Bertea Rnd. / subaptera Berté, Apenn. [= Apennines] / 3194 .
CURRENT STATUS: Menzel & Mohrig (2000: 601) placed it in Hymenoptera ; we return it to Diptera , but treat it as incertae sedis . See Remarks.
REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 190) key for the genus Bertea Rondani, 1856 lists Bertea subaptera as its type species, but he did not provide a detailed description, type locality, number or sex of the specimens. In his redescription, Rondani (1860a: 57) specified having just the male sex: “ semel marem [the male once]” collected by Dr. Bertè. Bezzi (1900b: 517) reported the MZUF holotype as being damaged and unrecognizable, but definitely a dipteran belonging to the family “ Mycetophilidae (Subfam. Sciarinae )”, currently the family Sciaridae . Menzel & Mohrig (2000: 601) claimed that it is a Hymenoptera , and O’Hara et al. (2011: 192) followed in treating the genus Bertea in Diptera . The MZUF holotype is indeed very damaged and, except for part of the thorax and one leg, covered with mold, but it is nonetheless clearly a dipteran. Rondani (1860a: 57) specified that the forewings are reduced and only slightly longer than the halteres ( Fig. 30).
