ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1868b: 30.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Mendoza ( Alto del Molino ) ( Argentina)” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂ syntype (double-mounted: fastened by a micro pin to a polyethylene foam block on a standard insect pin, missing head), 1 ♀ syntype (slightly mouldy, glued to the tip of a paper triangle) ( MZUF: Box 72): Tephritis vittipes Rnd., Am. Mer. [= South America] / [no identification number] .
CURRENT STATUS: valid species, unplaced to genus of Tephritidae ( Foote 1967: 58, Norrbom et al. 1999: 251).
REMARKS: Rondani (1868b: 30) described both sexes of Tephritis vittipes without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens received from P. Strobel. We found two syntypes in this study.
