ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 119 (key), 121 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ prope Parmam … in collibus ditionis [near Parma (Italy) … on surrounding hills]”.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Platycheirus sticticus ( Meigen, 1822) View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 73, Belcari et al. 1995a: 10).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 121) described Platycheirus spathulatus from just the male sex without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length: “ Mas speciei a me bis captus prope Parmam [the male of the species was collected by me twice near Parma ]”. We found four syntypes in this study. Tore Nielsen studied the type material without publishing any paper and considered Platycheirus spathulatus as senior synonym of Platycheirus muelleri Marcuzzi, 1941 (T.R. Nielsen, pers. comm., September 2013).
