Tabanus nigrocaeruleus Rondani, 1850 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1850c: 191.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Venezuela ” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype ( MRSN: Box 1755): Tabanus L. nigrocaeruleus Rndn. , ♀, Venezuela / Tabanus nigrocaeruleus Rond. 1850: 191 , Venezuela (not original label); 1 ♀, syntype (slightly covered with mold) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Tabanidei - Gen. Pangonia a Corizoneura ): Dicladocera nigrocoerulea Rnd. , Venezuela / M. Zool. N° 10909 / Probable type of D. nigrocoerulea Rond. , ♂, G.B. Fairchild, 1964.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species (as “ Dicladocera nigrocoerulea ”) ( Fairchild 1971: 74, Coscarón & Papavero 2009: 90).
REMARKS: Rondani (1850c: 191) described Tabanus nigrocaeruleus from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths, from material received from E. Truqui. Costa (1866: 39) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “908”. The subsequent spelling “ nigrocoeruleus ” has been used ( Philip 1965a: 121, Fairchild 1971: 74, Coscarón & Papavero 2009: 90) but it is not in prevailing usage ( Hunter 1901: 142, Kertész 1908: 265, O’Hara et al. 2011: 212). Therefore, the original spelling “ nigrocaeruleus ” is to be used and “ nigrocoeruleus ” is an incorrect subsequent spelling. Philip (1965a: 121) and Fairchild (1971: 74) reported syntypes in the MZUN and MRSN. We also found one syntype in the MRSN and one in the MZUN.
