ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 29 (key), 32 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Apennino parmensi [ Parmese Apennines ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♀♀, syntypes (one slightly covered with mold, the other missing right fore-, left mid-, and both hind-legs) ( MZUF: Box 1): Volucella Gffr. / proxima Rnd., Apenn. [= Apennines] / 20.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Volucella bombylans (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Peck 1988: 128, Belcari et al. 1995a: 14).
REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 32) described Volucella proxima without specifying the number, the sex or the length of the specimens, from material that he had collected and that he had also received from Bertè. We found two syntypes in this study.
