ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 26.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Valdivia [ Valdivia (southern Chile)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUN: Box Daxiidei D 01, 01): Sarcophaga spinigena Rnd., Am. merid. [= South America ] / M. Zool. N° 11376 / ♂ .

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Austrohartigia spinigena ( Lopes 1969: 8) ; valid species, as Microcerella spinigena ( Pape 1996: 258) View in CoL .

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 26) described both sexes of Sarcophaga spinigena from an unspecified number of specimens received from R.A. Philippi, to whom he attributed the species name. Costa (1866: 33) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “694” from “ Amer. mer. [= South America]”. We also found one male syntype in this study. The female type has presumably been lost.
