Sarcophaga cognata Rondani, 1861 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861g: 379 (key), 385 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Melita [ Malta]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, holotype (moldy) ( MZUF: Box 19): Sarcophaga Mgn / cognata Schembri , ♂ / 1005 / S. carnaria sec. Type Meig. det. Böttcher … [words not interpreted] / holotype ♂, S. cognata Rond., T. Pape det., 1986 / Sarcophaga cognata Rond., T. Pape det., 1986.

CURRENT STATUS: preoccupied by Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830; doubtful species of Sarcophaginae View in CoL ( Verves 1986: 192, Pape 1996: 422); junior synonym of Sarcophaga lasiostyla Macquart, 1843 ( Pape 1988: 6, Povolný & Verves 1997: 258); junior secondary homonym of Myophora cognata Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (in Sarcophaga View in CoL ) and senior (but invalid) synonym of Sarcophaga lehmanni Müller, 1922 ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020).

REMARKS: Rondani (1861g: 385) described Sarcophaga cognata from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from A. Schembri, to whom he attributed the species name. Pape (1988: 6) reported: “ 1 ♀ is standing with the type, but as the original description pertains to the male only, this is not a syntype ”. He considered the single male in the MZUF as the holotype.
