ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866b: 28 (key), 29 (description) [1867b: 112 (key), 113 (description)].

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in planitie parmensi [ Parmese plains ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 27): Scatina Desv. / fluvialis Rndn. , ♂, Parma / 1439; 2 ♀♀ (only one of the two is a syntype but is not labeled as such) ( MZUF: Box 27): Scatina Desv. / fluvialis Rndn. , ♀, Ital. mer. [= southern Italy], Parma / 1439; 1 ♂, syntype ( OUMNH General Collection: Box 164.5): syntype / Type / S. fluvialis Ex. Coll. Big. / syntype ♂ Scatina fluvialis Rondani, 1861 Conf. A.C. Pont 2014 / S. fluvialis Italia Rond. / Scathophaginae Scathophaga fluvialis (Rondani, 1867) , Palaearctic.

CURRENT STATUS: doubtful species of Scathophagidae ( Gorodkov 1986: 40) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1866b: 29) described Scatina fluvialis without specifying the number , the sex or the length of the specimens, publishing the species first in a separate (1866b) and then in the journal version (1867b). We found five specimens under the name Scatina fluvialis in this study (two males and two females in the MZUF and one male in the OUMNH). There are two MZUF females labeled “ Ital. Mer., Parma [= southern Italy, Parma ]” but, as the type locality is “ Parma ”, one of them does not belong to the type series. We are unable to single out which of the two was collected on the Parmese plains. We leave the recognition of this latter syntype to a future specialist. An additional two males and one female in the MZUF, all numbered “1439”, are not included in the type series because their labels are yellowish rather than the greenish color of Rondani’s original handwritten ones and are in a lower row in the Box, for which reason we treat them to be subsequent additions .
