This family of Orthorrhapha contains 2855 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1848b, 1850 c, 1856, 1863, 1875c) described nine Neotropical, two Afrotropical, three Oriental and one Palaearctic nominal species: 11 are currently considered as valid and four as junior synonyms ( James 1973, 1975, 1980, Rozkošný & Zaitzev 1988, Woodley 2001, Mason & Rozkošný 2005). Mason & Rozkošný (2005) examined the MSNG type material. Here, we designate a lectotype for Sargus leoninus Rondani, 1875 . Except for the type material of one South American species, which is presumed lost, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed among the MZUN (ten), MSNG (three) and MRSN (two).
