ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 53 (key), 60 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Pedemontio vel in Liguria [Piedmont as well as Liguria ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, holotype (missing head, terminalia in a microvial pinned below specimen) ( MZUF: Box 2): Merodon Fb. Latr. / mucronatus Rndn. / 55 / La Specola Firenze 55 / armipes det. Hurkmans, 1987 / Merodon ruficornis Meigen 1822 , det. Vujić, 2006 / Merodon mucronatus .

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Merodon ruficornis Meigen, 1822 View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 173, Belcari et al. 1995a: 16, Radenković et al. 2002: 52).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 60) described Merodon mucronatus from a single specimen: “ Exemplar unicum masculum in collection D. Mussino inveni [I found a single male specimen in Mr. Mussino’s collection]”. Giuseppe Mussino collected both in Piedmont and in Liguria.
