ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1865a: 131.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ in colle sub-apennino ditionis Parmensis [Parmese sub-Apennine hill ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, lectotype ( MZUF: Box 2): Merodon Fb. Latr. / canipilus Rnd. , ♂ / 52.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Merodon clavipes (Fabricius, 1781) View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 169, Hurkmans 1993: 178, Belcari et al. 1995a: 16).
REMARKS: Rondani (1865a: 131) described Merodon canipilus from just the male sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens: “ Semel captus mas [once the male collected]”. Hurkmans (1993: 178) designated a lectotype (♂).
