scientific name

Eristalis pascuorum Rondani, 1857
status

Eristalis pascuorum Rondani, 1857

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 39 (key), 41 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Österreich … auch hier [ Austria … also here (presumably Stolberg near Aachen in Germany where Meigen lived)]” ( Meigen 1822: 393) [type locality for Eristalis pratorum Meigen, 1822 ].

TYPE MATERIAL: see Remarks.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Eristalis pratorum Meigen, 1822 View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 189, Belcari et al. 1995a: 17); junior synonym of Eristalis similis ( Fallén, 1817) ( Hippa et al. 2001: 318) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 41) moved Syrphus pratorum Fabricius, 1775 to the genus Eristalis Latreille, 1804 and proposed the new replacement name Eristalis pascuorum for Eristalis pratorum Meigen, 1822 , preoccupied by Fabricius (18775: 765). The type material for Eristalis pascuorum will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Eristalis pratorum . The holotype of this latter species is preserved in the MNHN (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020). Under the name Eristalis pascuorum there are one male and one female in the MSNC and two specimens in the MZUB (non-types).
