ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1862d: 221 (key), 222 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in insula Melita [ Malta Island]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (covered with mold) ( MZUF: Box 21): Musca Lin. / gymnosomea Rnd. , ♂, Melita / 1114; 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUF: Box 21): Musca Lin. / gymnosomea Rnd. , ♀, Malta / 1115.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Musca domestica (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Pont 1986b: 91, Thompson & Pont 1994: 81, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 11).

REMARKS: Rondani (1862d: 222) described Musca gymnosomea from one male and two females: “ Exemplar unicum masculum et duo foemina a Do Schembri missa fuerunt [One male and two females were sent by Dr. Schembri]”. The two MZUF syntypes have different identification numbers. The second female syntype is presumed lost .
