This worldwide family of Orthorrhapha contains 299 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020) found predominantly in South America, South Africa and Australia ( Marshall 2012). Rondani (1863, 1868b) described six Neotropical nominal species. Four are currently considered as valid and two as junior synonyms ( Papavero 1968). Except for the type material of two species, which are presumed lost, all the remaining type material is in the MZUN.
