ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 96 (key), 106 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: Fallén (1825: 89) gave no locality in his redescription of Musca pallida Fabricius, 1787 , but presumably it is Sweden because the work deals with Swedish species; “ per Sueciam meridionalem & mediam …; in Scaniae … ad Räften, Abusa, Grönby, Lemmeströ-skog prope Börrige (D. CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Phaonia rufiventris ( Scopoli, 1763) View in CoL ( Pont 1986b: 129, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 13).
REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 106) proposed Yetodesia stolata for Musca pallida Fabricius, 1787 sensu Fallén (1825: 89) and for Anthomyza populi ( Meigen, 1826) sensu Zetterstedt (1846: 1742) , which he considered a new species. Rondani referred to Fallén’s redescription of Musca pallida , Zetterstedt’s redescription of Anthomyza populi , which were based on an unspecified number of specimens, and to an unspecified number of specimens received from E. Bertè, R.C. Staeger and C.L.F. von Roser. Therefore, the type material is in the collections of Fallén (NHRS), Zetterstedt (MZLU) and Rondani (MZUF). We found 15 syntypes in this study. The MZLU male labeled “87 / Staeg. [= Staeger]” is not included in the type series because J.W. Zetterstedt did not mention R.C. Staeger as collector of Anthomyza populi ’s specimens in his collection.
