TYPE LOCALITY: Meigen (1826: 64) gave no locality in his redescription of Musca lanio Panzer, 1798 , but presumably it is Europe because the work deals with European species; “ D’Allemagne [= Germany]” ( Macquart 1835: 271) [locality for Pollenia lanio (Panzer, 1798) sensu Macquart (1835) ]; “ Lapp.-Scan. [= Lapland—Scandinavia]” ( Zetterstedt 1838: 658) [locality for Pollenia atramentaria ( Meigen, 1826) sensu Zetterstedt (1838) ]; “ per totam Scandinaviam etiam Lapponiam … Finlandia, Pommerania & Glogavia. … Eldena prope Gryphiam [in all of Scandinavia also Lapland … Finland, Pomerania (= North of Poland and Germany) & Glogavia (= Germany) … Eldena near Greifswald ( Germany)” ( Zetterstedt 1845: 1337) [locality for Pollenia atramentaria ( Meigen, 1826) sensu Zetterstedt (1845) ]; “ in tota Italia, a Pedemontio ad Melitam [in all of Italy, from Piedmont to Malta]” ( Rondani 1862d: 200) [type locality for Pollenia paupera Rondani, 1862 ].

CURRENT STATUS: nomen dubium in Polleniinae ( Schumann 1986: 50) ; valid species, as Pollenia paupera ( Rognes 1991a: 366, Pape et al. 1995: 10).

REMARKS: Rondani (1862d: 200) proposed Pollenia paupera for Musca lanio Panzer, 1798 sensu Meigen (1826: 64) , for Pollenia lanio (Panzer, 1798) sensu Macquart (1835: 271) and for Pollenia atramentaria ( Meigen, 1826) sensu Zetterstedt (1838: 658, 1845: 1337 ), which he considered a new species. Rondani referred to Meigen’s, Macquart’s and Zetterstedt’s redescriptions of Musca lanio and Pollenia atramentaria , which were based on an unspecified number of specimens, and to an unspecified number of specimens in his collection. Therefore, the type material should be in the collections of Meigen (MNHN), Macquart (MHNL, MNHN, OUMNH), Zetterstedt (MZLU) and Rondani. There are no specimens in Macquart’s collection at MNHN (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020), at MNHL (O. Boilly, pers. comm., May 2019) and at OUMNH (Z. Simmons, pers. comm., May 2019). Rognes (1991a: 366) designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotypes (7 ♂♂, 8 ♀♀) in the MZUF but did not mention an additional 13 specimens: one in the MNHN, two in the MSNC, one in the MSNPV and nine in the MZLU (all are paralectotypes).
