Glossigona nupta Rondani, 1857 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 239.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Oesterreich [ Austria]” ( Meigen 1824: 147) [type locality for Glossigona bicolor ( Meigen, 1824) ].

TYPE MATERIAL: see Remarks.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Melanosoma bicolor ( Meigen, 1824) View in CoL ( Chvála & Smith 1988: 266, Rivosecchi & Scaramozzino 1995: 3, Stuke 2017: 145).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 239) considered the males of Glossigona bicolor ( Meigen, 1824) and the females of Glossigona nigra ( Meigen, 1824) as belonging to the same species but, instead of applying the Principle of Priority, he incorrectly proposed the substitute name Glossigona nupta . It has always been considered as a synonym of Melanosoma bicolor ( Meigen, 1824) ( Schiner 1861a: 383, Schiner 1864: 113, Becker 1905: 270, Kröber 1925: 36, Chvála & Smith 1988: 266, Rivosecchi & Scaramozzino 1995: 3, Stuke 2017: 145), never as a valid species. The type material for Glossigona nupta will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Glossigona bicolor . The type material of this latter species is in the NHMW ( Kröber 1915: 80). Stuke (2017: 145) incorrectly reported seven syntypes of Glossigona nupta in the MZUF. Under the name Glossigona nupta there are seven specimens (non-types) in the MZUF and one male (non-type) in the MSNC.
