Sphixosoma africana Rondani, 1873

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1873e: 283.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Ansaba [ Ansaba ( Eritrea)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, holotype ( MSNG): Bogos , Ansaba, Luglio 1870, O. Beccari / Typus / Sphixosoma africana / africana Rond. ♂ / Conops africanus Rond. , ♂, O. Kröber det. 1914.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Conops africanus (Smith 1980: 513, Stuke 2017: 14).

REMARKS: Rondani (1873e: 283) described Sphixosoma africana from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths, from material received from O. Beccari and O. Antinori. Guiglia (1957: 196) and Raineri & Rey (1996: 34) reported the holotype ( ♂) in the MSNG. This nominal spe- cies was described under the generic name Sphixosoma , which is an “unjustified emendation of Sphyxosoma Rondani, 1856 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 169).
