Hippoboscidae View in CoL View at ENA
This family of louse and bat flies contains nearly 800 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Once considered as separate families, Hippoboscidae s.s., Nycteribiidae and Streblidae are now considered as subfamilies of Hippoboscidae ( Marshall 2012, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1863, 1875 c, 1878a, 1879) described 12 Palaearctic, six Oriental, seven Neotropical, four Australasian, one Afrotropical, one Palaearctic-Afrotropical and one Oriental-Australasian nominal species. Fourteen are currently considered as valid, 17 as junior synonyms and one as doubtful ( Wenzel et al. 1966, Guimarães 1968a, 1968b, Maa 1977a, 1977b, 1977 c, 1989a, 1989b, Hutson & Oldroyd 1980, Hůrka & Soós 1986, Soós & Hůrka 1986, Pape et al. 1995). Guimarães & D’Andretta (1956) designated a lectotype for Nycteribia bellardii Rondani, 1878 in the MRSN. Maa (1963) designated nine lectotypes, five in the MZUF ( Chelidomya cypseli Rondani, 1879 , Lipoptena capreoli Rondani, 1878 , Lipoptena mazamae Rondani 1878 , Myiophthiria capsoides Rondani, 1878 and Ornithomyia bellardiana Rondani, 1878 ) and four in the MSGN ( Hippobosca bactriana Rondani, 1878 , Hippobosca canina Rondani, 1878 , Ornithoica beccariina Rondani, 1878 and Ornithomyia batchiana Rondani, 1878 ). Here, we designate a lectotype for Chelidomyia melbae Rondani, 1879 , Cyclopodia albertisii Rondani, 1878 , Myophthiria lygaeoides Rondani, 1878 , Myophthiria reduvioides Rondani, 1875 , Ornithomya gestroi Rondani, 1878 , Ornithomya hatamensis Rondani, 1878 . The type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed among the MZUF (21), MSNG (16), MRSN (four) and MZUN (one).
