Lasiops anthomynus Rondani, 1856

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 96.

TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but later (1866a: 143) added “ in planitie et collibus agri parmensis [ Parmese plains and hills ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂, syntypes (one dirty and missing mid-legs; the other missing right mid- and left hind-legs) ( MZUF: Box 25): Lasiops Mgn / anthomyinus [sic!] Rnd., Parma / 1366; 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUB: Box 332): 25 31 / Lasiops anthomynus Rond. , ex a. parmensi / anthomynus Rndn. , ♂, Parma ; 1 ♂, syntype (missing abdomen) ( OUMNH General Collection: Box 139.4): syntype / Typ. Rd anthom. / sec. typ. Rondanii / L. anthomyia Ex. Coll. Kow. / anthomyia Ztt. [sic!].

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Lasiomma anthomynum ( Dely-Draskovits 1993: 66, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 7).

REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 96) key for the genus Lasiops Meigen, 1838 lists Lasiops anthomynus as its type species, but he did not provide a detailed description, type locality, number or sex—except for a specific male character—of the specimens. He later ( Rondani 1866a: 143) redescribed the species as “ anthomyinus ”. The subsequent spelling “ anthomyinus ” has been used ( Kowarz 1880: 136, Pandellé 1900: 240, Bezzi & Stein 1907: 726, Hennig 1967b: 183, Dely-Draskovits 1993: 66, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 7) but it is not in prevailing usage ( Morge 1959b: 90, O’Hara et al. 2011: 206). Therefore, the original spelling “ anthomynus ” is to be used and “ anthomyinus ” is an incorrect subsequent spelling. Hennig (1967b: 183) considered one of the two MZUF males as the holotype but did not unambiguously indicate which specimen (no specimen bears any label indicating its status) and therefore did not publish a lectotype designation (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 74.6). We found four male syntypes in this study. An additional male numbered “1366” in the MZUF is not included in the type series because its label is yellowish rather than the greenish color of Rondani’s original handwritten ones and is in a lower row in the Box. We treat the latter to be a subsequent addition.
