Bibionidae View in CoL View at ENA
This worldwide family of Bibionomorpha flies contains almost 1,100 species ( Marshall 2012, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1850 c, 1863, 1868b, 1875c) described four Neotropical, two Afrotropical and one Oriental nominal species, all considered as valid, from material collected by others and sent to him for identification ( Hardy 1966a, 1973, 1980, Fitzgerald 1997). Rondani did not cover this family in his Prodromus . Fitzgerald (1997) designated a lectotype for Bibio intermedius Rondani, 1850 in the MZUF and for Bibio subaequalis Rondani, 1868 in the MRSN. Except for the type material of Bibio brachiata , which is presumed lost, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed among the MZUF (two), MRSN (two), MZUN (two) and MSNG (one).
