Agrilus zumbadoi View in CoL , new species
(Figs. 18, 19)
Description. Holotype female: Robust, in cross-section flattened above, convex below, 8.75 mm long, 2.25 mm wide; front and anterior 2/3 of pronotum red, epistomal area golden-coppery, posterior 1/2 of pronotum and small posthumeral spot on elytral costae bright blue, scutellum bright greenish-blue, antennae, anterior 1/4 of elytra, legs, and ventral surfaces black, short section of elytral costae and elytral margin posterior to blue spot reddish-coppery, posterior 3/4 of elytra golden green; metasternum, metacoxal plate and abdominal ventrites 2–5 black with golden reflections; head, pronotum and elytral humeri glabrous; setae short, dense, recumbent and inconspicuous on rest of elytra; setae silvery, denser and more conspicuous on upper posterior angles of metasternum, metacoxal plate, on dorsal portions of abdominal ventrites, and on lateral portions of abdominal ventrites 3–5.
Head with front convex, shallow depression along midline on lower 1/2, surface rugose and shagreened; epistoma 1/4 as wide as distance between inner margins of eyes, rugose, raised, ventral margin angulate-emarginate, eyes narrowly oval with deep groove above dorsal 1/2; antennae elongate, nearly reaching posterior angles of pronotum, serrate from antennomere 5, antennomeres 5–7 triangular, 8–11 rounded-rhomboidal.
Pronotum at posterior margin slightly narrower than elytra, with sides nearly parallel, narrowing slightly at apex; when viewed from side marginal and submarginal carinae slightly undulate, very narrowly separated for anterior 2/3; from above anterior margin produced as angulately rounded lobe; basal margin angulately emarginate at middle of each elytron, shallowly emarginate before scutellum; anterior portion of disc convex in cross section, with deep transverse depression at basal 1/3, angling forward to lateral margins in front of prehumeral prominences; prehumeral prominences not carinate, parallel to margin for 1/3 length of pronotum; disc finely concentrically rugose. Scutellum shagreened, triangular, rounded in front and acuminate behind.
Elytra about equally broad at humeri and just posterior to middle, lateral margins emarginate between, then narrowing to separate, narrowly angulately rounded apices, apices with several small teeth; each elytron with oval depression at base, disc weakly costate on basal 1/2; surface finely imbricate throughout.
Prosternum with sides of prosternal process parallel, rounded-angulate at apex; prosternal lobe transverse. Metacoxal plate with posterior margin nearly straight, upper exterior angle sharply quadrate. Abdomen with suture between ventrites 1 and 2 weakly indicated at sides, dorsal portions of ventrites 1–5 very narrow, ventrite 1 slightly wider at posterior end. Metatarsomere 1 as long as 2–4 combined, tarsal claws similar on all tarsi, cleft with shorter blunt inner tooth.
Type material. Holotype: Costa Rica: Prov. Here[dia]., Est. Magsasay, P.N. Braulio Carillo, 200m, L-N- 264600, 531100, Abr 1991, M. Zumbado, #5282 ( INBC, INBIOCRI 000575594).
Etymology. Named in honor of its collector, Manuel Zumbado of INBio and specialist on Costa Rican Diptera ( Zumbado 2006), including their mimicry.
Discussion. In this species, the bright blue base of the pronotum gives a stronger visual impression of a separate red head, and the greenish blue scutellum is striking. As with Agrilus opitzi and A. dimidiatus Waterhouse , this species lacks silvery setae on the sides of abdominal ventrite 2
