Argyresthia (Argyresthia) angusta Moriuti, 1969

Korean name: jop-eun-nal-gae-gwang-taek-jip-na-bang

( Figs 12–16 View FIGURES 12–16 )

Argyresthia angusta Moriuti, 1969: 12 ; Moriuti, 1977: 265; Moriuti, 1982: 223; Yamauchi & Hirowatari, 2013: 165; Liu et al., 2017: 62 View Cited Treatment . Type locality: Kyushu, Japan. Type depository: Osaka Metropolitan University (formerly Osaka Prefecture University).

Material examined. KOREA, Jeju-do, 1 ♁, Seogwipo-si, Haean-dong, Hallasan National Park , Eorimok , 975 m, 18.VI.2022, leg. Ga-Eun Lee, genitalia slide no. LGE22115 ( JNU), DNA voucher no. LGE-G727 ( JNU) .

Diagnosis. Forewing span 9.5 mm (n=1) ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 12–16 ). The forewing color and pattern of A. (A.) angusta are most similar to those of A. (A.) lanosa Liu, Wang et Li, 2017 and A. (A.) surrecta Liu, Wang et Li, 2017 distributed in China, and they can be separated by the characteristics of the male genitalia. Argyresthia (A.) angusta has valvae without dense setae on the ventral margin and a strongly curved phallus, whereas A. (A.) lanosa has dense short setae along its ventral margin and A. (A.) surrecta has a nearly straight phallus.

Variation. The socius of the type specimen has 7 scale-like setae ( Moriuti 1969, described as specialized scales), but the Korean specimen bears only five. Although Moriuti (1969) used the number of scale-like setae as one of the characteristics separating A. (A.) angusta from a related species A. icterias , it can vary within a species of Argyresthia : 5–10 setae in A. (A.) lanosa and 8–11 in A. (A.) surrecta ( Liu et al. 2017) .

Distribution. Korea (new record), China, Japan.

GenBank accession number. OQ857837.

DNA analysis. The sequences of two closely related species, A. (A.) lanosa (accession nos KY570298– KY570300) and A. (A.) surrecta (accession nos KY570301, KY570302), were extracted from GenBank. The interspecific variation between A. (A.) angusta and A. (A.) lanosa was very low, ranging from 1.7% to 2.0%, and that between A. (A.) angusta and A. (A.) surrecta was 2.4% ( Table 1 View TABLE 1 ).

Remarks. For the descriptions of adults and female genitalia, see Moriuti 1969: 12, 13. The female genitalia are illustrated in Moriuti 1969 (Figs 50, 75) and Liu et al. 2017 (Fig. 287), and the wing venation of a male (holotype) is given in Moriuti 1969 ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 17–22 ).
