ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861e: 106.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus agri parmensis [ Parmese hills ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (missing fore- and right hind-legs), 1 ♀, syntype (covered with mold, missing fore-, mid-, and right hind-legs) ( MZUF: Box 16): Cestonia R. / cineraria Rnd. / 844; 1 ♂, syntype (in poor condition, thorax partially eaten by dermestids, only two legs and both wings remain) ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Cestonia R. cineraria R. 131 ♂ Parma / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 2, posiz. C-14 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci ( PI) ex collezione Rondani.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 222, Pape et al. 1995: 21, Cerretti 2010: 230; O’Hara et al. 2020: 311).

REMARKS: Rondani (1861e: 106) described both sexes of Cestonia cineraria without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths. We found three syntypes in this study.
