Chlorotabanus leuconotus View in CoL n. sp.

( Figure 8 View FIGURE 8 A–I)

Type locality: Brazil (AM, Manaus).

Diagnosis: Medium sized (11.9–14.6 mm). Frons slightly convergent towards base. Flagellum of the antenna with basal plate slightly elongate about 1.5x stylus length. Thorax grayish-white and whitish pilosity. Abdomen greenish-yellow with whitish pilosity. Hyaline wing, except for the slight darkening of the costal cell.

Description (Holotype Ψ): Body length 13.1 mm ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 A–B); wing length 11.2 mm; wing width 3.7 mm.

Head ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 C): Eyes reddish. Frons with small rise at the mid basal region, with parallel sides slightly convergent at the base, F.I. 5.8, D.I. 1.3, pruinosity yellowish-brown and whitish-yellow pilosity. Subcallus, parafacialia, gena and face with pruinosity and pilosity as frons. Yellowish palpus with whitish-yellow hairs and some small black hairs. Proboscis with dark-yellowish theca; labella dark-green almost black. Antenna ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 D), with proximal region of the flagellum forming a slight dorsal projection. Basal plate slightly elongate, about 1.5x stylus length, B.P.I. 1.5, Flg.I. 1.4.

Thorax: Scutum with dark-brown integument, grayish-white pruinosity and whitish hairs. Slender legs; coxae, trochanters and femora greenish with whitish-yellow hairs; fore tibia covered with black hairs at a greater density on the apical 1/3; mid tibia with few black hairs and lower density than the fore tibia; hind tibia with dense black hairs on the distal half; fore and hind tarsomeres with dense black hairs dorsally; mid tarsomere with fewer black hairs dorsally. Etymology: From the Greek, “ leukos” which means white, and “ notos” which means dorsal.

Discussion: The widened frons and the yellowish coloring of C. parviceps and C. ochreus separate them from C. leuconotus n. sp. The hyaline wing of C. leuconotus n. sp. separates it from C. crepuscularis , C. mexicanus and C. fairchildi , which have evident spots in the wings. C. flagellatus and C. falsiflagellatus n. sp. have elongate basal plates and short stylus, while C. leuconotus n. sp. with basal plate subequal to stylus length. The basal plate can also be used to differentiate C. microceratus n. sp., with short and high plate. C. inanis has yellowish pilosity and hyaline wing with veins that are darker at the intersections, while C. leuconotus n. sp. has hyaline wings and whitish pilosity. C. leuconotus n. sp. can be confused with C. leucochlorus due to the whitish pilosity, but C. leucochlorus can be separated by the black hairs on the notopleural lobe and the elongated basal plate of the antenna.
