Erythmelus (Erythmelus) pastoralis Ogloblin, 1934 View in CoL

( Figs 87–89 View FIGURES 87–89 )

Eurythmelus pastoralis Ogloblin 1934: 252–254 , plates XXII, XXIV (holotype female [MLPA], labeled: 1. “ Eurythmelus pastoralis A. O. female Loreto, Misiones 20.iv.1934. Yerbal, Cesped Typus!”; 2. “3899/1”, examined. Type

locality: Loreto, Misiones, Argentina).

Erythmelus pastoralis Ogloblin View in CoL : De Santis 1967: 108 (catalog).

Material examined. ARGENTINA. MISIONES, Loreto : 12.viii.1934 [1 female, MLPA]; 22.vi.1936, A.A. Ogloblin (on Crotalaria incana with Lygus sp. ) [1 female, MLPA] .

Redescription. FEMALE (holotype). Body mostly dark brown except base of gaster yellow to light brown, hypopygium brown, midlobe of mesoscutum with a light brown transverse submedian stripe, and borders of axilla light brown. Appendages light brown to brown.

Vertex transversely striate, with a few short setae.

Antenna ( Fig. 87 View FIGURES 87–89 ) with short setae. Scape 3.9 x as long as wide; pedicel much longer than F1; all funicular segments at least a little longer than wide; F1 the shortest funicular segment, F2 as long as F3 and slightly shorter than F4, F5 as long as F4 and much shorter than F6; F1–F5 without longitudinal sensilla, F6 with 2 longitudinal sensilla; clava 3.5 x as long as wide, with 5 longitudinal sensilla.

Mesosoma ( Fig. 88 View FIGURES 87–89 ). Mesoscutum wider than long, its midlobe finely longitudinally striate and with 1 pair of strong setae. Axillar seta extending to about 1/3 length of scutellum. Scutellum about as long as mesoscutum, posterior scutellum finely longitudinally striate. Dorsellum broadly angulate posteriorly.

Wings ( Fig. 89 View FIGURES 87–89 ). Forewing 4.2 x as long as wide; blade slightly infumate behind venation but otherwise hyaline, with a few setae only in the apical 1/4; longest marginal cilia 1.4 x greatest width of wing. Hind wing 17 x as long as wide, almost as long as forewing; blade slightly infumate apically; longest marginal cilia about 4.8 greatest wing width.

Metasoma ( Fig. 88 View FIGURES 87–89 ). Petiole much wider than long. Gaster longer than mesosoma; ovipositor about 7/10 length of gaster, barely exserted beyond apical gastral tergum and not exserted beyond apex of hypopygium, 1.4 x length of metatibia.

Measurements of holotype (in µm). Body 627; mesosoma 212; gaster 312; ovipositor 206. Antenna: scape (including radicle) 88; pedicel 39; F1 12; F2 15; F3 15; F4 18; F5 18; F6 42; clava 106. Forewing 415:99; longest marginal cilia 142. Hind wing 409:24; longest marginal cilia 115.

MALE. Unknown.

Diagnosis. Member of the flavovarius species group. Erythmelus (E.) pastoralis and E. (E.) tingitiphagus differ mainly in the chaetotaxy of the forewing blade ( Figs 89 View FIGURES 87–89 , 75 View FIGURES 74, 75 , respectively). Both species have a narrow, transverse, submedian, yellow or light brown stripe on the midlobe of the mesoscutum. The mesoscutum of the Nearctic E. (E.) klopomor sp. n., to which E. (E.) pastoralis and E. (E.) tingitiphagus are both similar, is uniformly colored (dark brown) and the distal funicular segment of the female antenna (usually F6) has only 1 longitudinal sensillum (2 in E. (E.) pastoralis and E. (E.) tingitiphagus ). The minor differences between E. (E.) pastoralis and the very similar E. (E.) cingulatus are indicated in the key above.

Distribution. Argentina.

Hosts. Unknown. A possible association of this species with Lygus sp. (Miridae) was indicated by A.A. Ogloblin on the label of his slide with one of the non-type specimens (which he misidentified) from the type locality.
