Hamonthophagus depressus (Harold, 1871) View in CoL

This species was recently transferred from the genus Onthophagus Latreille into the newly described genus Hamonthophagus ( Roggero et al. 2017) . It was previously recorded widely in sub- Saharan Africa, including Angola, Botswana, Burundi, DRC, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe ( Ferreira 1972; Davis 2013b; Roggero et al. 2017). It has also been introduced into Madagascar, Mauritius, Australia, and the USA ( Davis 2013b; Roggero et al. 2017).

New country record for Swaziland: Eight specimens, Mbuluzi Game Reserve, 4–13 April 2015. This species was uniquely found in pitfall traps baited with vinegar on a sandy part of the banks of the River Mbuluzi. The species is recorded patchily in savanna habitats containing sandy ground in southern Africa and from a variety of different dung ( Davis 2013b). It is classified into the ‘least concern’ category in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species ( Davis 2013b).
