Luehea macrophylla Pohl (1833: 127) View in CoL .
Type:— BRAZIL. Goyas: Corumba, “ Habitat inter arbores ad margines fluviorum, circa Corumba , S. Luzia , Corgo di Jaragua , Capitainae Goyaz . Legi florentem mense Decembri et Januario 1819 et 1820”, Pohl s.n. (lectotype, designated here, W! [ W0071385 ]) . Goyas: Corumba , “ In silva Mattogrosso ad Corgo di Jaragua ”, Pohl s.n. (syntype remaining W! [ W0071100 ]). [= Luehea rufescens A.St. -Hil.]
In the protologue of L. macrophylla no reference is made to a specific specimen. Pohl’s original collection is kept in W where he worked and lived ( Stafleu & Cowan 1976 –1988: 315). We found only two specimens of Pohl’s original collection with the name L. macrophylla preserved in this herbarium. Both specimens were collected by Pohl in Brazil (B. Wallnöfer, pers. comm.), and are syntypes of L. macrophylla . They have labels mentioning the location congruent with the protologue, and Pohl’s handwriting (B. Wallnöfer, pers. comm.), but the page and illustration numbers of the species publication are erroneous and correspond to the description and illustration of L. microphylla . However, these specimens are L. macrophylla , and agree well with the vegetative and reproductive description presented in the protologue. For this reason, in accordance with Arts. 9.3 and 9.4 of the ICN, we have designated herein the specimen Pohl s.n. (W0071385) as the lectotype of L. macrophylla , by choosing the most complete specimen. The name L. macrophylla has been considered a synonym of L. rufescens A.St. - Hil. ( Schumann 1886).
