Mucor pernambucoensis C.L. Lima, D.X. Lima View in CoL & A.L. Santiago, sp. nov. FIG. 3 View FIGURE 3

Index Fungorum number: IF553241;

Etymology: Pernambucoensis . Referring to the state (Pernambuco) where the species was first isolated.

Colony initially white and becoming greyish to dull gray (MP 111A), covering the entire Petri dish and touching the plate lid (9 cm diam. and 1.5 cm in height) after four days at 25°C; reverse yellow-brownish (honey-colored) (MP 116J). Slightly aromatic. Sporangiophores repeatedly sympodially branched (up to six times), 5–12 μm diam., hyaline, smooth-walled, growing directly from the substrate, with short (majority) or long branches. Some branches arose just below the sporangia. Sporangia initially light yellow then becoming brownish with vitreous aspect, globose 14–60 μm diam., wall slightly echinulate. Columellae smooth-walled, hyaline, frequently globose 9.5–30 μm diam. or obovoid 14.5–35 × 9.5–22 μm, a few ovoid 10–30 × 10–22.5 μm. or cylindrical with a truncate base 10–25 × 20–40 μm, rarely piriform 12–35 × 9.5–22 μm. Collar evident. Sporangiospores mostly ellipsoid 4.5–12 (14.5) × 2.5–5, some ellipsoid to fusiform, sometimes flattened at one side, a few irregular in shape (elongated or recurved) 4–6 × 2–5 μm, hyaline, smooth-walled, containing one or more granules at each end. Chlamydospores globose or barrel-shaped. Zygospores not observed. Probably heterothallic.

Habitat: Soil

Distribution: Pernambuco, Brazil.

Specimen examined: BRAZIL, Pernambuco, Bonito (8°28’12’’S 35°43’44’’W), soil., 2017, C.L. Lima (URM 7640, holotype).

Notes: Mucor pernambucoensis is mainly characterized by the production of strongly sympodially branched sporangiophores with globose, obovoid, piriform, ovoid and cylindrical with a truncate base columellae, as well as sporangiospores containing one or more granules at each end.

Media and temperature: At 10°C—lack of growth; At 15°C—minimum growth (1.3 cm in 3 days), poor sporulation. At 20°C—good growth and sporulation (9 cm in 5 days). At 25°C—optimal growth and sporulation (9 cm in 4 days). At 30°C—growth and sporulation lower than at 25°C. At 35°C—lack of growth and sporulation. Similar growth on MEA and PDA at all temperatures with slightly better sporulation on MEA. Influence of light: not detected.
