Diagnosis

Arista distinctly plumose; frons with longitudinal brown band for entire length; distance between posterior frontal and anterior orbital distinctly shorter than distance between anterior and posterior orbital; three frontals; scutum without transverse band; postpronotum white; scutellum with three apical brown spots, only visible in ventral view; anterior margin of wing with one indentation near junction of vein C with apical part of vein R1; S­band and inverted V­band separate.

Description

Head. Antennal segments dark yellow to brown. Arista distinctly plumose; longest rays longer than width of first flagellomere. Frons white to yellow, longitudinal yellowbrown band for entire length from ocellar triangle to antennal base, equal to width between anterior orbitals. Three frontals placed on oblique line, with anterior frontal at least 3 times as far from the inner eye margin than posterior frontal; two orbitals, posterior one shorter than anterior one but well developed. Distance between posterior frontal and anterior orbital distinctly shorter than distance between anterior and posterior orbital. Face white to yellow, gena darker brown.

Thorax. Scutum shining black­brown, along transverse suture often yellow­brown, sometimes with faint yellow fascia; black setulae, without transverse bands of silvery setulae. Postpronotum white. Anepisternum with white to yellow band with lower margin reaching to lower fourth of posterior margin; with pale setulae, lower fourth black setulae sometimes more extensively so along posterior margin, two anepisternals. Katatergite and anatergite both white. Scutellum white, ventrally with 3 brown apical spots, not visible in dorsal view. Subscutellum black.

Legs brown, tibia, tarsal segments and extreme apex of front femur yellow, at most basal margin of tibiae slightly darkened.

Wing ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 7 – 9 ). Hyaline indentation near junction of vein C with apical part of vein R1, reaching vein R4+5, sometimes continuing slightly beyond vein. S­band and inverted Vband not fused; rarely V­band less strongly developed near subapical tooth, almost divided in two parts. S­band with small subapical tooth. Crossvein DM­Cu straight or slightly sinuous. R­M ratio 1.40.

Abdomen. Shining black­brown, tergite 4 with median yellow spot and/or silvery microtrichosity posteriorly; with black setulae. Spermatheca ovoid in apical part, base slender. Female terminalia, oviscape shorter than abdomen; shining black­brown. Aculeus orange, flattened, about 5 times longer than wide ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 13 – 22 ); tip simply pointed ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 23 – 27 ). Male terminalia ( Fig. 35), epandrium rounded in posterior view; posterior lobe of lateral surstylus elongated and almost straight; medial surstylus at apex pointed.

Hostplant

Material identified as C. tritea , but belonging to this species (according to the original description by Bezzi (1918)), from Olokomeji by Silvestri, was reared from fruits of Pyrenacantha vogeliana Baill. (Icacinaceae)

Comments

Specimens originally identified as C. pseudotritea proved to belong to a complex of different species. They are all characterized by the presence of a brown medial band running from the ocellar triangle downwards to the antennal base, a character state absent in other Carpophthoromyia . The species can only be differentiated from each other by slight differences in the position of the frontal and orbital setae, the width of the medial band, and the male and female genitalia. However, since the material for most of the sibling species is limited, and for two of the species the male sex is unknown, the intraspecific variation with regard to these characteristics is still largely unknown. Caution has to be taken in order to identify the species concerned correctly. The genitalia of those known sexes are hereby illustrated.

One specimen in the MNHU collection is labelled as originating from SE Cameroon. However, the other specifications on the label “Uam Gebiet” [Uam river territory] and “Bosum”, are situated in the Central African Republic.
