Platypus goilalae Schedl, 1975:387 View in CoL , new synonymy

Taxonomy: The species was described by Schedl (1973) in the genus Xyleborus View in CoL , but correctly transferred to Cryptoxyleborus View in CoL by Wood and Bright (1992). The type specimen of Platypus goilalae View in CoL in NHMW (photographs examined) is clearly Cryptoxyleborus vestigator View in CoL , and does not belong to Platypus View in CoL nor the subfamily Platypodinae . It is not clear how Schedl made and published such an egregious error after more than forty years of work on the two subfamilies. The error was first noted by D.E.Bright (in Wood & Bright 1992).

Distribution: Papua New Guinea. The species is recorded here for the first time from Indonesia (Sulawesi). Apparently it occurs only to the East of Wallace’s line.
