This taxon was described from a single specimen collected at «Dunedin, Florida ». The holotype, a female, is labelled «Dunedin, Fla W.S.B. Coll. 12-4-17/Casey bequest 1925/Type USNM 47350 View Materials / breviusculus Csy. [handwritten]/ UAIC 00044048 View Materials / holotype Loxandrus breviusculus by [handwritten] R. T. Allen» .

The holotype (SBL ¼ 8.6 mm; ABL ¼ about 8.8 mm) is conspecific with specimens of L. floridanus LeConte, 1878 [NEW SYNONYMY]. This species belongs to the agilis group and is relatively easy to recognize by its large size (7.3–9.4 mm), the infuscated femora and tibiae, the mentum without distinct foveal pits, the distinct microsculpture on the disc of pronotum, and the elytral epipleura not markedly sinuate at level of plicae.
