Description. Measurements (n=24, in mm): maximum width of head including eyes: 0.36–0.41; length of head (from base of labrum to neck contriction along head midline): 0.24–0.27; length of antenna (holotype): 0.44; ocular length (longitudinal): 0.10–0.11; length of temple: 0.05–0.06; length of pronotum: 0.27–0.32; maximum width of pronotum: 0.38–0.42; minimum width of pronotum: 0.27–0.33; sutural length of elytra (length of elytra from the apex of scutellum to the posterior margin of sutural angle): 0.44–0.52; maximum width of elytra: 0.44–0.49; maximum width of abdomen: 0.46–0.50; length of metatibia (holotype): 0.22; length of metatarsus (holotype): 0.11 (metatarsomeres 1–4: 0.03; metatarsomere 5: 0.08); length of aedeagus (from base of the median lobe to apex of parameres): 0.30–0.32; total length (from anterior margin of clypeus to apex of abdomen): 1.75–2.22 (holotype: 1.97).

Body somewhat parallel-sided, significantly flattened. Head and abdomen brown; pronotum reddishbrown; antennomeres 6–11, elytra (scutellar and apical portions slightly darker) and sometimes apical margins and intersegmental membranes of abdominal tergites 3–6 yellow-brown; mouthparts, antennomeres 1–5 and legs yellow. Middle portion of head with several sparse, irregular, fine punctures; pronotum with regular, fine punctation, sparser in medioapical portion and along midline; scutellum without punctures; elytra with punctation similar to that in pronotum, but slightly deeper and denser, smooth in apical and lateral portions; abdomen without or with very indistinct and sparse fine punctures. Head with dense, irregular and relatively coarse microsculpture: transverse in frontal, diagonal in middle and longitudinal in lateral portions; neck without microsculpture in middle, with isodiametric meshes in lateral portions; pronotum with dense, longitudinal microsculpture as that in head; scutellum without or with indistinct isodiametric microreticulation; elytra with longitudinal and diagonal microsculpture, denser and coarser than that in pronotum; abdomen with irregular, dense and coarse, transverse and isodiametric sculpture, markedly coarser on abdominal tergite VII. Pubescence of forebody very sparse and short; paratergites and tergite VIII with moderately long erect setae. Habitus as in Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–9 .

Head wide, subtrapezoidal, 1.5 times as broad as long, with long and moderately deep straight anteocellar foveae extending level of middle or apical third of eyes; basal margin of head straight; posterior portions between margin of ocelli and temples with distinct narrow and straight carina, almost reaching posterior margin of eye; postantennal depressions indistinct; eyes large, convex; ocelli moderately large, located very close to posterior constriction, distance between ocelli about as long as distance between ocellus and posterior margin of eye, or slightly longer; postocular parts moderately long, slightly convex, not expanded laterad, about twice as long as longitudinal length of eyes. Neck separated from head by distinct, narrow and deep constriction. Maxillary palpi moderately long; preapical palpomere swollen, slightly longer than wide; apical palpomere narrow, realtively parallel-sided, with conical apex, about 1.3 times as long as preceding palpomere. Antennae short, reaching apical third of pronotum when reclined; basal antennomere suboval, about twice as long as 2, antennomere 2 small, indistinctly longer than wide, 3 narrower, about as long as 2, 4 very small, transverse, 5 markedly wider than 4, twice wider than long, antennomeres 5–10 progressively widened apicad, distinctly transverse and covered by dense pubescence, apical antennomere wide, oval, about twice as long as 10.

Pronotum subtrapezoidal, slightly wider than long and about as wide as head, wider in apical portion, from middle strongly narrowed towards widely rounded posterior angles; apical angles widely rounded; apical margin straight or slightly rounded, with two small, convex tubercles at level of lateral margins of neck; basal margin rounded; median part with longitudinal narrow impunctated band; lateral portions bordered at margins and narrowly flattened, laterobasal portions distinctly impressed.

Elytra about as wide as long, 1.6 times as long as pronotum, somewhat parallel-sided, indistinctly widened in apical third towards widely rounded apical angles; apical margin straight or slightly rounded, truncated at suture. Wings fully developed.

Metatarsus twice as long as metatibia; apical metatarsomere significantly longer than previous four tarsomeres.

Abdomen parallel-sided, about same width as elytra, with two small, round wing-folding patches (tomentose spots) on abdominal tergite IV and narrow palisade fringe on apical margin of tergite VII.

Male. Apical margin of abdominal tergite VIII rounded ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1–9 ). Apical margin of abdominal sternite VIII slightly sinuate ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1–9 ). Genital segment as in Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1–9 . Aedeagus ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–9 ) long, with wide basal portion and very narrow median lobe; parameres distinctly widened apically, with three long apical, three preapical, and two lateral setae, and with three long additional setae along entire length of inner edge; internal sac without large sclerotized structures, with very small round spines in apical portion. Female. Abdominal tergite VIII ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1–9 ) and sternite VIII ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1–9 ) rounded. Genital segment as in Fig. 9 View FIGURES 1–9 ; acces- sory sclerite moderately wide, suboval. Spermatheca not found.

Comparative notes. Nipponophloeostiba thayeri sp.n. differs from Japanese N. verrucifera by the smaller body, darker abdomen, more prominent eyes, somewhat narrower head, with different shape of the postocular parts, not expanded laterad, slightly shorter elytra, narrower median lobe and wider apical portions of the parameres, with more setae on them.

Distribution. The species is known from several locations close to each other in Kinabalu National Park in Sabah, Borneo Island, Malaysia.

Bionomics. Specimens were collected at elevations 1500 to 1600 m a.s.l. Some specimens were collected in large cut Quercus .

Etymology. Eponymic, the species is named to honour my colleague Margaret K. Thayer (Chicago, USA) for help in the study of Omaliinae during many years.
