DESCRIPTION. — Habitus, colour, vestiture and designs as in O. cylindricus , differing from this as follows:

Prorostrum in male distinctly transverse, 1.4 x wider than long instead of as long as wide. Rostrum in female only slightly, 1.04-1.09 x longer than prothorax, and just over 5 x longer than wide at apex; postrostrum distinctly tapering, squamose on basal one-half or more; prorostrum relatively much shorter, 1.7 x longer than wide at apex instead of well over twice as long. Fore femora with very small towards apex directed tooth; hind femora extending beyond tip of abdomen in male. Fore tibiae in male long, extending to coxae when folded, spinulosely asperate on lower edge, without distinct tooth opposite femoral tooth.

Male: tegmen similar to that of O. ambiguus (Fig. 182), with strongly reduced parameral sector, lobes very short, fused except at apex. Aedeagus as in Figs 176, 177, parallel-sided, 1.10 x 0.36 mm; apodemes more than half as long again as body; basal sclerite 1.64 x longer than aedeagal body; steering plate much broader than in O. cylindricus ; pair of median sclerites absent.

Length: 7.5-9.0 mm.

TYPE MATERIAL. — Three specimens identified by Montrouzier as O. centurio are present, two belonging to O. cylindricus , the third one is here designated to represent the species. Lectotype male, 7.5 x 2.9 mm, ‘ Orthorhinus centurio Montr. , Balade’, Coll. B. Perroud, MNHN. Other specimens with BPBM, IRSN, NZAC.

HOSTPLANTS. — No information.

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — New Caledonia: Aoupinié, Balade, La Crouen, Plataeu de Dogny. 5 specimens .

ETYMOLOGY. — ‘Centúrio’ is a noun for an officer commanding a century in the Roman army.

REMARKS. — The main characters that distinguish the species from O. cylindricus are given in the key to species. If in doubt, male genitalia of the two species, which are abundantly different, are to be consulted.
