Material examined

Holotype: Cuba, Prov. Pinar del Rio, Pas de Guajaibon , soil from mountain rainforest, 07 XII 1979, leg. J. Borhidi.

Measurements of holotype

Prodorsum: length 343, width 242, height 106, sensillus 65.8, setae: interlamellar and lamellar, rostral 63.8, exobothridial 25.3; notogaster: length 697, width and height 434, setae: c 1 111, c 3 22.8, h 1 114, ps 1 152; genitoaggenital plate 162X121, anoadanal plate 217X116.

Description

Colour, grey-brown. Surface of body covered with fine, polygonal mosaic and with strong cerotegument.

Prodorsum with long and narrow sigillar regions. Sensilli long with narrow pedicel and swollen, rough head. Setae short, rough, interlamellar and lamellar shorter than rostral setae.

Notogaster with 15 pairs of short, rough setae. Some setae (c 1, c 2, c 2, h 1, h 2, ps 1, ps 2) longer than other. Setae c 2 more remote from anterior border than setae c 1 and c 3. Vestigial setae f 1 and f 2 invisible. Four pairs of lyrifissures ia, im, ip and ips present.

Ventral region. Setae h of mentum shorter than distance between them. Arrangement of genital setae: 4+2: 3. Anoadanal plates with rough, rather long setae, ad 2. an. ad 1. ad 3.

Chaetome of legs of ‘‘complete type’’, but right femur of holotype is without seta v ’’, setae d of femora I slightly remote from distal end of the segment.

Etymology

The name is derived after the Province Pinar del Rio in Cuba.

Comparison

The new species is similar to Protophthiracarus fonseciai (Perez-Inigo and Baggio, 1980) and Protophthiracarus heterosetosus Niedbała, 2003 but it is distinguishable by the shorter interlamellar setae, longer rostral setae and different length of notogastral setae. Setae c 1, c 2, h 1, h 2, ps 1, ps 2 are longer than the other ones.
