Genus Tesserocerus Saunders, 1836 View in CoL

Tesserocerus dewalquei Chapuis, 1865 View in CoL

Notes. This commonly collected Tesserocerus species ranges from Mexico to Argentina and is recorded from almost all Neotropical countries, including Peru. Older identifications are often given as Tesserocerus dejeani Chapuis View in CoL , a junior synonym. However, many South American specimens labeled T. dewalquei View in CoL or T. dejeani View in CoL belong to an overlooked smaller, undescribed species which seems to be widespread in Amazonia, my Tesserocerus LRK View in CoL 013. The Peru specimens I have seen are all LRK 013; none are T. dewalquei View in CoL . The species is tentatively listed here as it is recorded from Peru ( Schedl 1972; Wood and Bright 1992); it may well be present in Peru, since there are syntypes of T. dejeani View in CoL from Colombia (IRSNB). Tesserocerus elegans Chapuis, 1865 View in CoL

Notes. Not represented in the material at hand. Nunberg (1939) reported two females from “ Peru ” (no other data). As females are difficult to separate and it is not known what material was available to Nunberg, this country record should be verified. However, the species has been found in Colombia and Venezuela, so it is likely that it occurs in Peru as well .

* Tesserocerus ericius Blandford, 1896

Notes. Found throughout Mexico and Central America , but only known from Brazil in South America. One additional male: Junín , 15 km NW from Satipo, Rio Venado village environs, 1,300 m, window trap, −11.2811°, −74.7686°, 3.X.2015 A. Petrov ( AVPC) .

* Tesserocerus forcipatus Schedl, 1936

Notes. Previously known only from two specimens from Brazil. A Peru series was col- lected from Los Amigos Biological Station (eight from FIT and Malaise traps). An additional female is labeled Madre de Dios, Puerto Maldonado , 5-XII- 2013, 267 m, −12.5610°, −71.1065°, T. Pérez, Malaise trap ( FSCA) .

* Tesserocerus guerini Chapuis, 1865 View in CoL

Notes. Only known from South America, where it is widespread.

Tesserocerus inermis Guérin-Méneville, 1838 Notes. Only known from South America, where it is widespread. Material in the current study is from 260–560 m elevation, from FIT and Malaise traps.

Tesserocerus procer (Erichson, 1847)

Notes. Previously known from northern South America and Peru and Bolivia. New Peru records: 1 male, Pasco, [Oxapampa,]

Pan de Azucar, 8 July 1961, F. S. Truxal (SEMC) ; 1 female, Pasco, [Oxapampa,] Pan de Azucar , 18 July 1961, F. S. Truxal ( SEMC) ; 1 female, San Martín, Moyabamba, vic. Ecológico ‘ Rumbipata’ , −6.0756°, −76.968 8, 13–18.X.2012, J. E. Eger, UV light ( FSCA) ; 1 female, San Martín, 5 km SE Moyabamba, Rumbipata Lodge , 970 m, 13-17.X.2012, J. B. Heppner ( FSCA) ; 1 male, Junín, 15 km NW from Satipo, Rio Venado village environs, 1,300 m, window trap, −11.2811°, −74.7686°, 3.X.2015, A. Petrov ( AVPC) ; 1 female “ Pérou, Chanchamayo, Ch. O. Schunke” (no date) ( MNHN) ; 1 male, Madre de Dios, Puerto Maldonado , 11–XI– 2014, 267 m, −12.56104°, −71.10645°, T. Pérez, Malaise trap ( FSCA) ; 1 female, Madre de Dios, Puerto Maldonado , 6–XI– 2014, 267 m, −12.56104°, −71.10645°, T. Pérez, Malaise trap ( FSCA) .

* Tesserocerus rudis Chapuis, 1865 View in CoL

Notes. Previous records from southern Central America and northern South America. A midelevation species. One Peru male each from Cuzco, [Paucartambo,] Cock of the Rock Lodge , −13.055°, −71.545°, 1,120 m, FIT, 4– 9 Nov. 2007, David Brzoska ( SEMC); and Huanuco, Cordillera Azul, 39 km NE Tingo Maria, [−9.194554°, −75.8267,] 1,700 m, site 672, 11–14 Jan. 1983, montane rainforest, A. Newton and M. Thayer ( FMNH) .

* Tesserocerus spinax Blandford, 1896

Notes. Widespread in Central America and northern and central South America. Four specimens in addition to the records in Table 2: 1 male, Madre de Dios, Tambopata, Los Amigos Biol. Sta. , −12.4025°, −70.1111°, 270 m, sample Peru 13, trunk ( MSUC-10 ), 26 April– 27 May 2008, S. M. Smith and J. Hulcr ( MSUC) . 1 male, funnel traps near an Eschweilera tree fall, by Berkov and Centeno from Los Amigos , Oct. 2001 ; 1 male, Madre de Dios, Puerto Maldonado , 31-XII- 2013, 267 m, −12.5610°, −71.1065°, coll. T. Pérez, Malaise trap ( FSCA) ; 1 male, Junín, 15 km NW from Satipo, Río Venado village environs, 1,300 m, window trap, −11.2811°, −74.7686°, 3.X.2015, A. Petrov ( AVPC) .

A smaller, undescribed species is sometimes identified as T. spinax , but it has not been found in Peru.

** Tesserocerus LRK 004

Notes. This undescribed species is smaller than, but very similar to, T. ericius . It is common in Costa Rica. I have seen three specimens from Bolivia ( USNM, FSCA), so its occurrence in Peru ( Table 2) is not surprising .
