ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 179 (key), 181 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in agro parmensi [ Parmese territory ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♀♀, syntypes (one missing left wing) ( MZUF: Box 6): Pipiza Mgn / excalceata Rnd. , ♀ / 324.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Pipiza festiva Meigen, 1822 View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 86, Belcari et al. 1995a: 11).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 181) described Pipiza excalceata from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, despite there being two specimens in the type series found in this study: “ femina [sic!] tantum a me capta [only the female collected by me]”. We consider these as syntypes.
