This worldwide family of calyptrate flies contains almost 5,300 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1848b, 1850 c, 1856, 1862d, 1863, 1866a, 1868a, 1871a, 1873e, 1875 c, 1877c) described 91 nominal species (44 in Rondani, 1866a alone): 82 Palaearctic, four Afrotropical, three Neotropical and two Oriental species. Of these, 33 are currently considered as valid, 56 as junior synonyms, and two as doubtful ( Pont 1972, 1977, 1980 a, 1986 b, Thompson & Pont 1994, Gorodkov et al. 1995, Carvalho et al. 2005). Rondani (1863, 1868a) proposed one new replacement and one new substitute name for a species previously described and named by other authors; he also proposed three names in synonymy and was not made available by use as a valid species before 1961 (1862d, 1866a, 1877c) as well as one nomen nudum (1868d). In his paper on the Rondani types at MZUB, Morge (1959b) listed three unpublished names (nomina nuda ) of Rondani. Hennig (1961) examined the MZUF types without publishing any lectotype designation. Except for the type material of 16 species, which are presumed lost, the remaining type material is distributed among the MZUF (62), MSNC (11), MSNPV (eight), OUHMN (eight), MRSN (seven), MSNG (four), MZUN (three), MZLU (two) and MHRS (one).
