Differential diagnosis. Male ( Fig. 102) body length (taken from anterior margin of labrum to elytral apex) 1.9−2.3 mm (mean 2.05); females of similar length to males. A morphologically variable species in size (see range) and colour (brown to black), but without any correlation between those features and their geographical distribution; therefore, there is no justification to subdivide this taxon. Internally, the male genitalia ( Figs 71−72 View FIGURES 69−74 ) unequivocally distinguish P. maclellani from all species. Externally, the wide and round shape of the elytra, the unmodified male palps ( Figs 23 View FIGURES 1−24 ) and less modified male foretibiae ( Figs 25−26 View FIGURES 25−30 ) separate P. maclellani from all species except for P. mariae and P. glabriventris . However, it differs from P. mariae in size, shape of elytra, the chaetotaxy and length of the male palps (compare Fig. 23 View FIGURES 1−24 with Figs 19−20 View FIGURES 1−24 ), and the male foretibiae (compare Figs 25−26 View FIGURES 25−30 with Figs 27−28 View FIGURES 25−30 ). Furthermore, the male genitalia of P. maclellani have a thicker and straighter flagellum than in P. mariae ( Figs 69−72 View FIGURES 69−74 ). Lastly, P. maclellani is readily separated from P. glabriventris , externally by the relative length of the third and fourth palpomeres ( Figs 23−24 View FIGURES 1−24 ), the shape and size of the metaventral glabrous central area ( Figs 48, 50 View FIGURES 47−51 ), the shape and chaetotaxy of last abdominal male tergite ( Figs 52−53 View FIGURES 52−60 ) and the length of the spiculum in the male ventrite 7 ( Figs 56, 58 View FIGURES 52−60 ). Internally, the male genitalia of P. maclellani and P. glabriventris also allow a clear separation of these two species ( Figs 71−74 View FIGURES 69−74 ).

The morphology of the last abdominal tergite ( Figs 53 View FIGURES 52−60 , 62 View FIGURES 61−68 ) allows a better separation of the two sexes of P. maclellani than the foretibiae. Further, females of P. maclellani can be distinguished from all other Podaena females by the morphology of the last two tergites, the gonocoxite ( Figs 61−62, 64 View FIGURES 61−68 ), and the spermatheca ( Figs 85−86 View FIGURES 83−94 ). The male genitalia are completely sclerotized, with long thin parameres, a long slightly curved main piece and distal lobe, and a cylindrical, thick, straight flagellum ending in a pruinose apex. A transparent ejaculatory pump is associated with the flagellum ( Figs 71−72 View FIGURES 69−74 ).

Distribution. As in Fig. 95 View FIGURES 95−98 . Widely distributed over the South Island. Three specimens in two samples from Northland (ND) were identified as P. maclellani during the course of our study, being the first recorded samples of this species from the North Island (see Material examined below). Although the data associated with those three specimens may be erroneous due to contamination between samples or incorrect labelling, being samples recorded as collected in two different dates, we cannot overrule the possibility that a genuine northern population of P. maclellani does exist. Furthermore, our examination of the three northern specimens would indicate that they may even belong to a close but different species from P. maclellani (see Remarks below).

Remarks. The three specimens from the North Island recognized here as P. maclellani are somewhat different from the southern populations of the same species. The pronota and elytra are predominantly matt in the northern specimens, not shiny as in those from the South Island, and the pronotal punctures are larger and more densely distributed in the northern specimens. The only male available from the North Island has somewhat different genitalia from those in South Island males, but those differences can be attributed to individual distortions. Having only three specimens, including one single male, no final decision can be made regarding their true identity. Additional specimens from the Mangamuka area or from any other North Island locality are necessary to reach a meaningful conclusion.
