Sarcophagidae

This worldwide family of calyptrate flies contains some 3,100 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). In his “ Stirps Dexinae ”, rather than in the family Sarcophagidae proposed by Macquart (1834b), Rondani (1848b, 1850 c, 1851, 1856, 1859b, 1861g, 1862d, 1863, 1865 c, 1868a, 1873e, 1875c) described 61 nominal species(more than half of which were proposed in Rondani 1859b and 1861g): 48 Palaearctic, ten Neotropical, two Afrotropical and one Oriental. Of these, 20 are currently considered as valid, 32 as junior synonyms, one as a senior synonym (nomen oblitum) and eight as doubtful ( Lopes 1969, Lopes et al. 1977, Dear 1980, Verves 1986, Pape 1988, 1996, 2002, Pape et al. 1995, Povolný & Verves 1997, Whitmore 2011, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1851, 1856, 1859b) proposed one new replacement and two new substitute names for species previously described and named by other authors; he ( Rondani 1859b, 1865c) also proposed two names in synonymy and was not made available by use as valid species before 1961. Andy Z. Lehrer, F. Mihályi, T. Pape, and D. Whitmore reported having examined the MZUF type material, but only Pape (1985, 1986, 1988) designated a lectotype for Brachicoma adolescens Rondani, 1859 , Heteropterina multipunctata Rondani, 1859 , Hilarella italica Rondani, 1859 , Macronychia sylvestris Rondani, 1865 , Megerlea furnaria Rondani, 1862 , Metopia roserii Rondani, 1859 , Metopia staegerii Rondani, 1859 , Miltogramma pilimana Rondani, 1859 , Miltogramma pilitarsis Rondani, 1859 , Sarcophaga adolescens Rondani, 1859 , Sarcophaga amita Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga consanguinea Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga consobrina Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga filia Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga infantula Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga matertera Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga nepos Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga noverca Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga privigna Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga puerula Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga setinervis Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga setipennis Rondani, 1861 , Sarcophaga soror Rondani, 1861 , Sphixapata albifrons Rondani, 1859 , Sphixapata lineolata Rondani, 1859 , Sphixapata maculosa Rondani, 1859 , Sphixapata pelopei Rondani, 1859 , Sphixapata penicillaris Rondani, 1865 and Sphixapata piligena Rondani, 1865 . Here, we designate a lectotype for Miltogramma punctatella Rondani, 1868 . Osculati (1850), Costa (1883), Brauer (1899), and Morge (1959b) listed five names (nomina nuda ), which they attributed to Rondani. Except for the type material of four nominal species, which are presumed lost, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed among the MZUF (45), MSNC (15), MSNPV (seven), OUMNH (four), MZUN (four), MSNG (three), MZUB (two), MRSN (one) and MHNL (one).
